There are many people who have doubts about how many times a dog should go for a walk and there is no exact number of walks that can be considered the ideal. There is no maximum, but there is a recommended minimum and an approximate duration.

Waking up, taking the dog for a walk, having breakfast, going to work, taking it out again, having dinner and sleeping. Whoever agrees to have a pet, agrees to have to give it walks in which the animal can run around, enjoy and socialize.

As we have said, there is no exact number of times that you have to take the dog for a walk, since each one is different and has specific needs. It should not be forgotten that the walk is a very important routine for the dog, since his well-being and part of his daily socialization will depend on it.

How many times should a puppy walk?

At three months, most puppies already have vaccines and, at that moment, they are ready to start going out and taking their first walks. This routine is essential for a puppy dog, since you have to teach him to urinate in the street, allow him to socialize with other dogs or people and make sure that he enjoys the walk, as it is something that he will do throughout his life.

When the time comes to teach him to urinate outside, it will happen on several occasions that the puppy cannot stand and urinates inside the house. There is no need to worry or scold him, it is normal that he takes a long time to learn. We must be very patient, constant and make use of positive reinforcement at all times, congratulating him whenever he urinates in the street, either with the use of caresses or treats for dogs.

It is important that, more or less, we begin to calculate the time that our puppy can last without urinating at home, to know how often we have to go for a walk with him. On the other hand, you also have to observe at what times of the day he wants to urinate the most, for example after eating or after sleeping.

The walking time of a puppy dog will vary depending on its age, its morphology or its level of activity, but it is recommended to take short and frequent walks, to avoid tiring it excessively.

In short, the number of times a dog urinates per day depends on the case, a puppy dog may need to go outside between 3 and 5 times a day, but some may need up to 6 short exits to avoid urinating at home.

How many times should an adult dog be walked a day?

When the dog reaches its adult stage, most already know how to urinate and defecate outside, however, it may happen that after poor learning, a bad experience or a pathology, it may have an accident from time to time. It is important not to scold the dog and try to find out what is causing this behavior. It is also possible to teach an adult dog to urinate on the street.

In walks for an adult dog, the objective will be to provide a positive, entertaining, relaxing and enriching activity, which will significantly improve the well-being of the dog. It is very important to say that all of this varies greatly depending on the individual. Walking a Chihuahua is not the same as a border collie or an English bulldog, each breed has specific needs for activity.

Therefore, depending on the energy level of the dog, we will decide to take the dog out twice a day, three or even four. It will depend on each specific case. What is not recommended is to take the dog out once a day, since the only thing that will be achieved is that our dog has to endure too many hours, causing him great discomfort.

On the other hand, many owners also wonder what time they should walk the dog. It is advisable to extend the morning walk, which is usually the most relaxed, take short walks during the rest of the day and take a medium-length one during the evening or at night. If we refer to the walk time, we can calculate that an adult dog must walk between 45 and 90 minutes a day, either divided into two, three or four walks - it depends on the availability of each one to do it -.

And, in addition, depending on the needs of the dog, it may be necessary to perform a dog sport. Of course, any dog should have at least five free minutes off leash in a safe area to release it. This greatly improves the quality of the ride and your well-being.

Walks of an elderly dog

Elderly dogs have special walking needs, which must be adapted depending on the specific case and the presence or absence of diseases. In this stage, the same routine as in adult dogs is still maintained, although the number of walks is adapted if it is observed that our dog begins to show problems related to urination or feces.

It may be interesting that at this stage more daily walks of shorter duration are started, with the aim of not tiring the animal but increasing enrichment at the same time. It is necessary to moderate physical exercise if necessary and pay more attention to possible health problems that may appear during the walk - as is the case of heat stroke in summer or sheltering them in winter -.

It's important to remember that an elderly dog still needs your attention and frequent activities to stay active.

In short, - and what many experts say - the more times the animal goes out on the street, the better. As we have already said, there is no maximum number of walks, but it is important to meet the needs of our dog.
